Scabiosa Gigantea - Tatarian Cephalaria
A perennial “Scabiosa” that has a clump forming base of lobed basal leaves, from which tall wirey stems sore out of, with floating butter yellow pincushion blooms. And when I say soring, the stems can reach 8+ feet, which makes this a wonderful plant for at the back of a border. And the stems are long and strong, which lends well to bouquet design work.
You might get year one blooms, but 2nd year blooming is more common for this perennial.
Also known as: Scabiosa “Giant Yellow”, Cephalaria caucasica or Scabiosa gigantea
Minimum of 15 seeds per packet.
Sun: Full
Type: Hardy Perennial (zone 4-9).
Start: Surface sow with minimal to no cover. You can start 4-6 weeks before last frost, transplant after frost. I find winter sowing techniques work well for this one, and then transplant after last frost.
Height: Low 2ft clump with 5-8ft wiry stems
Width: 24-36 in
Plant Spacing: 15–18 in.
Deer Resistant!
Harvest: When flowers are still in bud stage.
Blooms all season, till first frost.
Vase life: 7-10 days.
